DTF Printing Explained: What It Is, Why It’s Popular, and When to Use It
If you’ve been looking at custom T-shirts, hoodies or workwear lately, you’ve probably seen “DTF printing” pop up everywhere.
DTF stands for Direct to Film. It’s a modern printing method that gives you bright colours, sharp detail and a durable finish and it works on a wide range of fabrics.
At Plus Printing in Victor Harbor, DTF is one of our go-to options because it’s flexible, reliable, and perfect for everything from one-off gifts to business uniforms.
What is DTF printing?
With DTF, your design is printed onto a special film first, then transferred onto the garment using heat and pressure.
The big advantage is that it’s not limited to one fabric type, it can be used on most common apparel materials, and it holds detail really well.
Why people love DTF
Here’s why DTF has become so popular for custom apparel:
No minimum orders - you can do just 1 item, or 50+
Great colour and detail - ideal for logos, gradients, and full-colour artwork
Works on lots of fabrics - including many cotton, poly and blends
Durable - made to handle regular wear and washing
Fast turnaround - great for clubs, teams and last-minute needs
What DTF is best for
DTF is a solid choice for:
Business uniforms (tees, polos, hoodies)
Club and team apparel
Event shirts
Workwear branding
Small runs for new businesses
One-off gifts and custom pieces
If you’re after a clean, professional look without needing embroidery, DTF is often the sweet spot.
What DTF isn’t ideal for
DTF is versatile, but it’s not the answer for every job.
If you need:
A super “invisible” print feel (some prints can feel slightly raised)
A specific specialty finish (like puff, metallic, or reflective)
Extreme heat exposure (certain work environments)
…we’ll tell you upfront and recommend the best option for your use.
Artwork: what we need from you
To get the best result, the best file to send is:
PNG (high resolution, ideally 300dpi) with a transparent background
We can also work with:
PDF, AI, EPS, SVG, PSD, and some JPEGs
If you’re not sure what you’ve got, just send it through, we’ll let you know if it’s print-ready.
Care tips (so your print lasts)
A few simple habits make a big difference:
Turn garments inside out before washing
Wash in cold to warm water (avoid very hot washes)
Avoid harsh chemicals/bleach
Line dry where possible, or tumble dry on low
Don’t iron directly over the print (iron inside out if needed)
